Bassmaster Classic Tournament Starts Friday

POSTED: 7:56 am EDT July 28, 2005
UPDATED: 10:43 am EDT July 28, 2005 Pittsburgh's three rivers offer a daunting challenge to the competitors in the Bassmaster Classic that starts Friday.

Normally one of the nation's best urban fishing spots, the city has miles of waterfront close to downtown and countless locations to cast a lure. Now, Pittsburgh is moving into the major leagues of fishing with the Friday-through-Sunday tournament.

There's one problem, though: it's late July, usually one of the down times for bass fishing upon the Ohio, Allegheny and Monongahela rivers and their tributaries.

The waters are very warm because of the just-ended heat wave, and the fish are looking for cool waters and plenty to eat.

That means competitors likely won't come close to achieving last year's winning weight of 39 pounds, two ounces by Takahiro Omori, the total weight of his top five catches for all three days.
